KMPDU Boss Reveals 4 Doctors' Demands Ruto's Government Ready to Settle After Talks

The Deputy Secretary General of the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), Dennis Miskellah, affirmed that the doctors' strike would persist unless the government meets their demand for a Ksh206,000 salary for interns.

In an exclusive interview with media for the Evening Brief newsletter, Miskellah confirmed that while the government had agreed to address several issues raised by the union, the sticking point remained the interns' pay.

He explained that the government had committed to settling the Ksh3.5 billion arrears owed to doctors over five years, providing medical cover, promoting doctors, and paying pending fees.

"The government has made some commitments. They agreed to settle our 7-year debt over five years, amounting to Ksh3.5 billion," he stated.

"They also promised medical cover, doctor promotions, and payment of pending school fees."However, Miskellah emphasized that the interns' salary was non-negotiable, and the union could not accept a lower stipend, equating it to a pay cut.

"The main issue causing the problem is the interns' pay, which must match what was agreed upon 7 years ago. If there's any change, it should be an increase, not a reduction from what they were earning when milk was Ksh10," he added.
