Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja's plan to build a nightclub in Uhuru Park has been paused after a meeting with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
LSK, led by its chairperson Faith Odhiambo, insisted that public participation must happen before any action is taken on the plan supported by Sakaja and a private investor.
Odhiambo explained that LSK wanted the Governor to stop inviting bids until the public had a chance to share their opinions.
"We made it clear that the Governor must follow the law. We'll make sure everything stays within the law," Faith said.
Dr. Owiso Owiso, also from LSK, demanded the Governor write a letter confirming that public parks like Uhuru Park won't be commercialized.
But Sakaja hasn't announced when public participation will happen.
Many Kenyans questioned why a nightclub and dancing fountain were planned for a public space.
Before, the Governor asked for bids to build a nightclub costing Ksh 156 million.
"We'll have restaurants and a nightclub here. You can enjoy without disturbing the neighborhoods. We'll handle the bidding transparently," Sakaja said.
