Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua supported Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja regarding the flooding in the capital.
Speaking at his home in Karen on Wednesday, April 24, during a meeting with the Nairobi Rivers Commission, Gachagua said that political opponents shouldn't make the floods in Nairobi a political issue.
"These Nairobi rivers aren't about politics. When they overflow and affect people, they don't care about political sides. They affect everyone. We want to tell our people that elections are over, and it's time to work together," he said.
His comments followed education analyst Janet Ouko's statement blaming the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) for the floods because they supported Sakaja.
She said UDA should take responsibility for the floods because they chose Sakaja despite his questionable academic history. She said UDA should apologize to residents instead of complaining.
"Voters don't decide who becomes governor in big political parties. We expect UDA to take responsibility for the leadership they chose for City Hall. They shouldn't complain; they should apologize to Nairobians," she said.
On Wednesday, April 24, 10 people died, and eight were missing after heavy rains on Tuesday night. The Kenya Red Cross rescued 18 people stranded in Mathare who were on rooftops because of the rain.
