Heavy rains have been falling across Kenya since the Easter holiday in 2024. The rain has caused floods, damaging property and leading to over 30 deaths in different parts of the country.
In the Nairobi Metropolitan Area, floods have shown the weaknesses in drainage and infrastructure in Machakos, Nairobi, and Kajiado counties. In Homa Bay County, more than 600 people have been forced out of their homes by overflowing rivers like Sondu Miriu and Tende. After heavy rains, many roads in Nairobi have become impassable or dangerous.
Residents in slums and areas like Mirema have reported water entering their homes, making them unlivable. Places with poorly planned construction or inadequate drainage systems have suffered as water flooded houses.
With more rain expected, health experts are advising people on how to stay safe. Dr. Moses Kihuga, a diagnostic medicine expert, warned people not to walk barefoot in flooded areas. He mentioned a case where someone walked on their hands to avoid dirtying their white shoes. Dr. Kihuga explained that floodwaters are often contaminated with sewage and other harmful substances.
He also advised people to have enough clean drinking water at home. Since tap water might be contaminated during floods, he recommended boiling it before drinking to make it safe.
