Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa faced hostility from mourners in Bumula on Saturday, April 28, during the funeral of Innocent Sangura, a respected academician from the area.
When Barasa spoke at the funeral, he accused one of the deceased's relatives of not using his influence to help employ qualified locals. He referred to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu's efforts to employ people from his community in top government positions.
Barasa's comments upset some mourners, leading to a brief commotion as they moved towards him to stop his speech. They believed it was inappropriate for Barasa to criticize someone who was mourning.
"We won't let Didmus Barasa speak anymore. You can't attack someone who's grieving," one man said.
Barasa chose to leave the podium before finishing his speech, respecting the wishes of the mourners. His security detail escorted him safely out of the chaotic situation. MP Jack Wamboka intervened to calm the situation after Barasa left.
Wamboka immediately charged the clerics with running the remainder of the program perhaps so as to prevent such chaos. "I want to thank the church for allowing us the opportunity to speak. I want to return the program to the church," said Wamboka.
